The Iiyiyuu Trail Maker Shop

The Iiyiyuu Trail Maker Shop was created as an extension of Maaskinaahchaasiuch, a Cree not-for-profit initiative rooted in Chisasibi, Eeyou Istchee. The name Maaskinaahchaasiuch means “trail makers” — a reflection of those who go ahead, who create paths for others, and who carry knowledge forward.

Maaskinaahchaasiuch began from a simple but important realization: traditional snowshoe knowledge is still alive, but it needs space, tools, and opportunities to continue. Snowshoe making is more than a craft. It is land knowledge, material knowledge, seasonal knowledge, and family knowledge passed from one generation to the next.

Over the years, workshops and courses brought together youth, adults, and Elders to learn how to select trees, bend frames, lace with care, and understand why Iiyiyuu snowshoes are shaped the way they are. Through this work, it became clear that there was also a need for a platform — a way to make these snowshoes and materials available beyond the workshop space, and to support the artisans who continue to practice the craft.

The Iiyiyuu Trail Maker Shop was created to answer that need.

Here you will find handcrafted snowshoes made using traditional Cree knowledge and materials suited for northern winter travel, as well as snowshoe making supplies for those who wish to learn and continue the craft themselves. Each pair reflects time, patience, and experience on the land.

This shop is not only about selling products. It is about creating sustainability for Cree craftsmanship, supporting local makers, and ensuring that the knowledge carried by our Elders continues to move forward.

We are trail makers — on the land and in our community.

Made in Eeyou Istchee. Built with knowledge. Shared with respect.
